Last week, a team of archaeologists made a very rare find during excavations in NΓΆrdlingen, Germany.

They found an exceptionally well-preserved bronze sword, with a richly decorated rectangular hilt which, on first inspection, appears to date from the end of the 14th century BC, i.e. the Middle Bronze Age.

It comes from a tomb in which three people with rich bronze grave goods were buried in quick succession: a man, a woman and a young man. It is still unclear whether the people were related to each other, and if so, how.

The blade shows no impact marks. This would lead one to think that the sword had a ceremonial function or was a symbol of high status, however, according to the researchers, it would still have served as an effective weapon as the center of gravity at the front of the blade indicates that it would have been used predominantly for cutting .
