FACTS ABOUT SCORPION STINGS (Part 1)
Scorpion sting is one of the most painful experience, had a personal experience, personally the pain was around 8 on a scale of 1-10, there was however a relief within the next 1-2hours.
However, out of 1500 scorpion species, only 50 are dangerous to humans, that is about 3.3%
Scorpion stings are painful but mostly harmless. The sting may cause redness and swelling along with a burning or stinging sensation.
Most people will not get any serious symptoms. If they do occur, they will start in the first 2-3 hours after the sting.
Hence the first 2-3 hours after sting is golden
First signs of a serious sting can be muscle twitching or rapid eye movements. Pain, tingling and numbness can also spread to all the arms and legs.
Most deaths occur during the first 24 hours after the sting
and are secondary to respiratory or cardiovascular failure
The very old and the very young are most likely to die of untreated venomous scorpion stings though very few. The cause is usually heart or respiratory failure occurring some hours after the sting.
WHAT TO DO after stings
Use ice bags to reduce pain and to slow the absorption of
venom (most effective during the first 2 hours)
Hot water immersion has also been suggested
Most patients recover fully after scorpion envenomation.
