SUSAN HAYWARD
Susan Hayward (1917 ~ 1975) continued her popularity into the 1950s and became an even bigger success (see our previous 1940s spotlight on her as well as her films from that decade).
She placed # 9 in both 1952 and 1953 and # 10 in 1959 at the box office. She won the Best Actress Oscar for "I Want To Live" (1958) and was also Oscar nominated for "With A Song In My Heart" (1952) with Rory Calhoun and "I'll Cry Tomorrow" (1955) with Jo Van Fleet. (Two other Oscar nominations during the 1940s as well in which we already covered).
Hayward's other films during the 1950s and 1960s included: "Back Street" (1961) with John Gavin and Vera Miles, "The Lusty Men" (1952) with Robert Mitchum and Arthur Kennedy, "Ada" (1961) opposite Dean Martin, "Soldier Of Fortune" (1955) opposite Clark Gable, "The Conqueror" (1956) with John Wayne, "Garden Of Evil" (1954) opposite Gary Cooper and Richard Widmark
"Top Secret Affair" (1957) with Kirk Douglas, "Where Love Has Gone" (1964) with Mike Connors and Bette Davis, "Valley Of The Dolls" (1967) with Patty Duke and Barbara Parkins, "Untamed" (1955) opposite Tyrone Power, "The Snows Of Kilimanjaro" (1952) with Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner, "David And Bathsheba" (1951) opposite Peck, "Rawhide" (1951) with Power, "White Witch Doctor" (1953) with Mitchum, "Woman Obsessed" (1959) with Stephen Boyd, "Thunder In The Sun" (1959) with Jeff Chandler, "I Thank A Fool" (1962), "Stolen Hours" (1963), "The Honey Pot" (1967), "The Marriage-Go-Round" (1961), "The President's Lady" (1953) and others.
Susan's last theatrical film was "The Revengers" (1972) with William Holden. She also made a 1972 TV movie called "Say Goodbye, Maggie Cole". She passed in 1975 at age 57 from cancer. Many believe it materialized from radioactive fallout (from atmospheric atomic bomb tests) during the filming of "The Conqueror" in 1956 (as many other cast and crew members from that film passed from cancer).
