58 Years Since the Passing of Eli Cohen – "Our Man in Damascus"

Eli Cohen was an Egyptian-born Mossad agent who successfully infiltrated the Syrian government and became the trusted confidante of the Syrian Prime Minister, Minister of Information, and various upper echelon military generals.

In 1961, Cohen moved to Argentina in order to build his cover for his secret identity - Syrian businessman Kamel Amin Thaabet. After a year in Argentina, Cohen moved to Syria and started to climb the ranks of the Syrian Government, reaching the position of Chief Adviser to the Minister of Defense. It was said that he was even being considered for the role of Deputy Defense Minister.

In 1965, Syria upped its search for a mole within their ranks, and using new Soviet technology, discovered Cohen passing information to Israel. Although this is the accepted story, the Mossad has reiterated that the reason behind Eli's capture is still unknown.

Cohen was captured and tortured for information, but never broke. He was sentenced to death and was publicly hanged on May 18, 1965.

The intelligence that Eli passed over to Israel was invaluable and his bravery was a major factor in helping Israel defeat the Syrians in the Six Day War.

His sacrifice undoubtedly saved hundreds if not thousands of Jewish lives. May his memory be a blessing.
